On December 1, 1937, Andong City was formally established and became the seat of the provincial capitals of Andong Province and Liaodong Province. Since June 1954, it has been under the jurisdiction of the provincial government of Liaoning Province. In 1965, The State Council decided to change the name of Andong to Dandong, which means "City of the Red East".

Under natural conditions, it takes more than 20 years from planting to bearing fruit. After 40 years, it can bear a large number of fruits, so it is nicknamed "Gongsun tree". As early as the early 1930s, Dandong transplanted ginkgo trees on both sides of the street.

 

According to data research, there are only six streets in Asian cities with century-old ginkgo trees, and there are three in Dandong City. Dandong is the Asian country with more than 100 years of ginkgo trees. A ginkgo tree in Dandong's Dagushan Temple is more than 1,300 years old, 35 meters high, and its fruit weighs hundreds of kilograms every year. In Dandong urban streets and parks, there are a considerable number of 300-500 years old ginkgo trees, and the main streets of the city are almost covered by more than 100 years old ginkgo trees. According to statistics, there are nearly 1,000 large ginkgo trees in Dandong that are more than 80 years old, and more than 4,000 that are more than 30 years old. In March 1984, after the second session of the ninth People's Congress of Dandong deliberated and approved, Ginkgo tree was officially named as the City tree of Dandong.
