Birds that stop in the Yalu River wetland overwinter mainly in wet and tropical areas such as Australia and New Zealand, and breed in cold temperate areas near the Arctic, which is the main reason why birds migrate all year round. In Asia, bird migration has two routes, namely East Asia and West Asia. The route of East Asia migration mainly flies through Hong Kong, Taiwan, Yangtze River Estuary, Shuangtaizi Estuary, Ocean Estuary and Yalu River Estuary, and finally reaches the Greater Khingan Mountains in China, eastern Siberia in Russia and Alaska in the United States.

 

In the process of migration, these birds fly from the wintering ground non-stop to here at one time, the linear distance is about 6,500 kilometers, but due to the weather and other factors, in fact, the flight distance of birds can reach about 10,000 kilometers, non-stop flight for a week, do not eat, do not drink and do not stop, so a lot of energy consumption. A bird that starts out at its wintering grounds weighing 500 grams will have lost half of its body weight by the time it reaches us, leaving only 250 grams. So they have to forage quickly to get back to the weight they had when they left their wintering grounds, in about a month.

 

Scientists have tracked by satellite the bar-tailed godwit, one of the main waterbirds, after a continuous flight of 10,000 kilometers from non-stop sleeping and feeding ground in New Zealand for about eight days to the Yalu River wetland. In May, after sufficient feeding and refueling, the bar-tailed godwit flew 7,000 kilometers non-stop from the Yalu River to the breeding ground in Alaska.
